Prosnostications for College Football Bowl Season 2011-12

The NCAA (engineered by the geek BCS computer scoring system) bowls will last well into next January with the LSU-Alabama game being held three weeks away in the ‘Nawlins’ Super Bowl on Monday, January 9,2012.

Very few of the matchups look intriguing to Mic, Ike, Teddy, or I. The University of Alabama Crimson Tide and the Louisiana State University Bengal Tigers’ BCS Title Game is just a re-run catering to the Southeast Conference and NASCAR fans who care to spend hours and hours in front of their TVs. The best games will not be held on New Year’s Day but on Monday, January 2, 2012. It is silly but true. No New Year’s Bowls will be held on New Year’s Day 2012!

My extended family will limit our viewing to ten games; lest we might get stupid watching all those silly beer and car commercials. That means that we will be unable to tune into the Cotton, Compass, GoDaddyDotCom, and BCS bowls. The first really good matchup is this Saturday in Boise. Take the Ohio Bobcats, and three-and-a-half points and look for a high-scoring offensive showdown with the Utah State Aggies in “The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.”

The most stupid game to be scheduled is the “Maaco Las Vegas Bowl” between the 11-1 Boise State Broncos and the 6-6 Arizona State Sun Devils. You will want to do something else at 8:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, December 22.

The next great game will not come until after Christmas. The “Holiday Bowl” will be held again in San Diego on Wednesday, December 28th. Texas Longhorns (7-5) versus California Berserkley Golden Bears (7-5) will be a hotly contested contest. Bet on the second half after seeing how the first half goes.

On Thursday, December 29th is an interesting matchup of the preseason #4-rated Florida State Seminole Indians and the preseason #6-rated Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Orlando’s “Champs Bowl.” A life-long ND fan, I will be betting my ex-wife’s house on the Irish and taking three-and-a-half points.

After the actual New Year’s Day will be the best 24 hours of the 2011-12 college football bowl season. Look for good matchups in the “Ticket City Bowl” in Dallas, “Outback Burger Bowl” in Tampa, “Capitol One Bowl” in Orlando, “Gator Bowl” played in Jacksonville not Gainesville, “The FTS/FHS/FedEx/Kinko’s Rose Bowl” in Pasadena, and the “Tostitos, Fritos, Lay’s Barbeque Baked Potato Chips Fiesta Bowl” in the Phoenix Area.

We are selecting as the early favorites on “New Years”:

  • Houston Cougars (-5.5) defeating the Penn State Nittany Lions

  • Georgia Bulldogs (-3.5) favored to win over the Michigan State Spartans

  • Nebraska Corndogs (+3.5)

  • Florida Alligators to swallow up the Ohio State Buckeye’s point spread

  • Wisconsin Badger-dogs (+6.5) to upset the cute Oregon Ducks

  • Stanford Cardinal-dogs (+3.5) to beat the Oklahoma State Cowboys
