There are always first round March Madness upsets

Watch out for the Bulldogs, Pirates, and Rams.

The ultimate college basketball champion is as wide open as it has been for decades as no team starts the tourney with 3, 2, 1 losses, or unbeaten. The East bracket will be the most contested: North Carolina will meet challenges getting through to the Final Four.

Although #1 vs. #16 upsets are rare, the matchup of state rivals Hampton and University of Virginia is a game that has to be played. You can imagine how pumped up the Hampton Pirates will be with their two senior guards averaging over 17 points per game.

Our #2-15 possible upset is the Wildcats of Weber State and Xavier. The Wildcats can pull it off if guard Jeremy Senglin can continue scoring 44.2% on 3-point shots.

Look at this #3-14 seeded possibility it is the red hot Fresno State Bulldogs, fresh from a conference tournament win versus the higher seeded Utah Utes. The Bulldogs have two senior guards that could spell trouble.

“March Madness”

Next at 4 vs 13 is Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors (27-5) and the California Bears (23-10), who just lost an assistant coach. The Bears play good defense but the Warriors are better at forcing turnovers. The Warriors are coming off a conference tournament win, too.

There may be two 5-12 upsets this week. The most frequent upsets during the first round often are with the #5 against the #12. The Yale Bulldogs are riding high and will be up against the jet-lagged Baylor Bears in Rhode Island.

The number six seeds should all pass the first round: Arizona, Notre Dame, Texas, and Seton Hall.

Watch for a 7 vs. 10 upset this Friday afternoon. VCU (24-10) can keep their winning streak going against Oregon State (19-12).

The first upset of the tournament may be in Des Moines. Connecticut Huskies (#9) can handle the (#8 seeded) Colorado Buffalos. The hot Huskies are coming off a conference tournament championship. U Conn’s front line is bigger at 7-foot, 6-7, and 6-7.
